In 1961, the Caisse d'Epargne de l'Etat purchased the buildings of the old Mercier establishments in rue d'Alsace in Luxembourg-City. Among the abandoned paperwork, the new owners found a film shot in 1907 by the itinerant producers Wendel and Peter Marzen who lived in Trier and were regularly active in Luxembourg. The Luxembourg subsidiary of the Mercier wineries was established in Luxembourg in order to take advantage of the customs union (Zollverein) between Luxembourg and Germany and export the champagne into Germany. In 1963, Philippe Schneider restores the Marzens' film with help from the Caisse d'Epargne, adds contemporary images and commentary and retitles the ensemble "Regards sur le passé".
